Taking inspiration from top 2018 trends
Local décor experts will celebrate the thrills of living in the beautiful metropolis of Durban, it’s vibrant talent on the decor scene and as a celebration of families within their unique creative spaces.
Visitors can expect to see top trends on display as flashbacks from yesteryear re-emerge in new ways. Think bold floral patterns as well as geometric and organic forms from the 70s; the minimalist Scandinavian style of clean lines, raw wood and natural light; as well as subtle inclusions of mixed material, brass or copper metallic elements and earthy, warm colours.
The unique Durban lifestyle is a big part of why locals love the area and embrace the vibrant, diverse culture that defines it. Showcasing some this local flair is the introduction of Discover Durban Design, a brand-new concept to the show, which will celebrate local products, furniture and fashion. In keeping with the local theme, the first weekend of the show will showcase the popular Home Grown Design Fair pop-up feature, focusing on artisanal design and décor products made by talented, local crafters and design studios.
“We have so much talent on our doorstep and we needed a bigger platform to showcase this talent; it’s time we discovered this, which is why we brought the Home Grown Design Fair back as a pop–up event so that we can feature a wide variety of talent on the first weekend of the show,” says Baxter-Bruce.
Also adding to the new line-up is a focus on décor for kids’ spaces. Parents looking for help in decluttering and redecorating their children’s rooms or living spaces can find workable solutions with Genevieve Motley, well-respected designer, blogger and founder of inspirational kid’s décor and handmade toys online store, Olly Polly.
Joining Olly Polly are a whole host of exciting concepts to incorporate into kids’ spaces that make up an exciting show feature called The Edit. Explore a selection of rugs, wallpapers, nursery furniture, bedding, hanging tents, tee-pees, wall hangings, floor cushions, throws and blankets, night lights, garlands, cushions, clothing, macramé and more.
“Parents sometimes hit a mental block to achieving a beautiful home amongst the chaos of toys and routine. Genevieve understands the importance of comfort, style and practicality in the family home, while ensuring that the children are involved in the process of decorating the space they love,” says Baxter-Bruce.
In keeping with a modern look but catering to various tastes, the 2018 show will showcase superior, local interior specialists; including traditional African printed accessories and fabrics, captivating art, lazercut home décor, natural fibre and vinyl rugs, blended concrete and wooden furniture, embroidered pure cotton percale linen, handcrafted furniture and décor, handcrafted quality silk and real flower arrangements and customised hardwood furniture.

Merging outdoors and city living
Creating a sense of the outdoors in a home need not only be for those with large spaces, big budgets or green fingers; the international 2018 gardening trend “working with what you have” is a concept that aligns and a focus of, this year’s East Coast Radio House & Garden Show’s theme “Home is Where the Heart is”.
This trend builds on the concept that regardless of the kind of dwelling a family calls home, creating the ideal home differs on how the entire space is used depending on the unique needs, hobbies, interests and patterns of its unique occupants. Modern gardening, is no different, and as such should reflect each family’s personality, embrace city living and unite those who live in it.
“As the technological age advances, it has never been so important to establish a relaxed space for reflection, meditation or winding down from a busy day. Incorporating plants and rustic furniture into a space brings a sense of nature into urban life,” says Show Director, Cairey Baxter-Bruce.
Prepare to be inspired by landscaped garden features, gain insight and go home with indoor, outdoor, seasonal and edible plants in the popular Green Fingers area.
