FOLLOWING a frantic middle part of the year where he raced extensively in Europe, Durban-based triathlete Ben de la Porte is back home and preparing for the upcoming ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, the world championships, in Gold Coast city in September.

The 18 year-old former Clifton College pupil set himself some tough goals for 2018 and following a busy start to the year he is happy when reflecting on what he has achieved so far.

“Up to now, my year has gone really well. I have achieved most of the goals which I set out at the beginning of the year. My season started off at KZN champs in January, followed by the Cape Town World Cup which was my first international race of the year. I then had SA Champs, where I managed to win the junior men, followed by Africa Champs in Morocco where I tied for the win – my goal was to win both of these races. My final few races have been in Europe where I raced six races in five weeks, my goal was to come in the top 10 in every race which I managed to do and came third in my final individual race,” the Varsity College athlete said.

With the busy period behind for the meantime, De la Porte has been working with biokineticist Gavin Muir, getting himself prepared for his world championship attempt.

“I have just had a break as I was exhausted when I returned from Europe. I started training again recently so my focus is entirely geared towards being fit and healthy for World Champs,” De la Porte explained.
