Metro arrest over 100 drunk drivers

METRO Police were out in force this weekend as Durban hosted a number of weekend events.

According to Metro Police’s Snr Supt Parboo Sewpersad, more than 100 people were arrested for drinking and driving at roadblocks held in Durban on Saturday following the Vodacom Durban July revelry.

“There were three major events and after parties on Saturday, so it was an eventful weekend for us. Not only did we arrest over 100 people for driving under the influence, but many vehicles were also towed for parking in no stopping zones around the Greyville Racecourse,” he said.

Sewpersad said when one considered that over the past month 431 people were arrested for drinking and driving, the number of arrests on Saturday was astounding.

“Drunk drivers were kept in cells until they were sober and were then allowed to contact lawyers to arrange bail. In other cases we had to wake up people sleeping outside Moses Mabhida Stadium and on the Durban Country Club beach,” he said. He said people were urged to arrange for designated drivers or taxis to pick them up rather than to drink and drive.

He also mentioned that metro police had made three drug busts in the Chatsworth area at the weekend, where three suspects were arrested and drugs to the value of around R500 000 were recovered.

“Metro Police really pulled out all the stops to ensure law was enforced and events were successful this weekend,” he said.
