GLENWOOD maths boffin, Jachin Collins, will be setting off for China in September to compete against learners from around the world in the 15th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO).
Jachin, a learner at Glenwood Prep who takes extension maths as an extramural activity, wrote the country-wide test to qualify. Jachin, along with five other learners from KZN were selected to travel to Zhejiang Province, China, to take part in the international Olympiad from 28 September to 4 October.
“Jachin has always been good at maths. It is exciting for him to go to a different country with his friend from school. It might be a bit overwhelming to take part in this competition, so it will be great to have a familiar face there too,” said his mum, Caz.
Jachin said he was feeling a little nervous about the trip, but was confident he would do well. He has been sent practice papers to prepare for the Olympiad and was getting ready mentally.
The trip will include an opening ceremony and welcome dinner, theory and exploration tests, and a tour and culture night.

“I’m hoping to go far in the competition and the fun part will be that my friend will be with me so we will have shared memories,” he said.
Caz said the family would need to raise around R52 000 for the trip, as she will be joining Jachin.
“As Jachin is only 12, I don’t want him to travel alone, and definitely want to be there for him. For him to be representing his country is amazing,” she said.
She will be hosting events to raise funds, including a Chinese dinner at Glenwood Community Church. She said a friend had also offered to cook ready-made meals for her to sell to raise money for the trip.
If anyone can help with donations or is interested in attending the dinner or buying meals, contact Caz on [email protected], or Jachin’s father, James on 076 191 2593.
