Ratepayers offered debt relief amnesty

RATEPAYERS who have an outstanding debt with the eThekwini Municipality have been granted a two month amnesty during which time the city is encouraging them to come forward and pay a 10 per cent down-payment on the money owed to the city.

The two month amnesty period runs from 1 June to 31 July.  Previously, customers who owed the city money were encouraged to approach the city to establish a payment plan which started with a down-payment of 25 per cent of their outstanding amount.

Peet Du Plessis, Head of the City’s Revenue Management Unit said that the amnesty was not just about the bottom line, but to assist residents. “We hope that this period will encourage customers with outstanding debt to come forward and make an arrangement for payment. It also provides much needed debt relief to customers who cannot afford to pay. Customers who owe the city money are cautioned that if arrangements are not made, the municipality will not hesitate to institute legal action to recover the debt.

Payment arrangements can be made at any of the City’s Sizakala Centre’s or Customer Care Centres. Customers may also visit the next Customer Service Roadshow taking place from 9 – 10 June at the Chatsworth Centre, Mega City, KwaMnyandu and Hammarsdale Malls.
