DURBAN Surf Lifesaving Club’s Nippers walked off with the SA title for the sixth consecutive year at the recent SA Nipper Lifesaving Champs.
In the Surf competition, held on PE’s Kings Beach, Durban Surf dominated the event. The club took title honours in the U9/10 and U11/12 age groups and placed third in U13/14 age group, thereby taking the overall Surf title by nearly 100 points from the second placed club, Fish Hoek.
In the Stillwater competition held at the Newton Park swimming pool, Durban Surf placed third overall behind two stillwater specialist teams from Gauteng. This enabled Durban Surf to also win the combined Surf/Stillwater title, amassing more than double the second placed club’s points.

Standout performers on an individual level won competitor of the event in their respective age groups. In the U10 boys Surf category, winner was Matt Canning, in the U12 boys, Caine Letschert won the event and in the U14 girls, Tatum Botha took the win. In the U9 boys Stillwater category, Elliot Springate won his event. On the back of their performances, Tatum Botha, Kira Ribbink, Courtney Steyn, Tannah Smith, Max Davidson and Ozzy Aromin have also made the KZN Nipper Lifesaving team to compete at inter-provincials in two weeks time.
Two of the club’s U13 boys, Reece Truter and James Kitto, were also honored with Meritorious Awards for bravery for saving a fellow pupil’s life while at school, further highlighting the club’s emphasis on saving lives as well as winning trophies.
