Umbilo police held up, hijacked

TWO police officers from Umbilo SAPS were robbed and hijacked of their vehicle while on patrol on Monday morning, 9 April.

Lt Col Thulani Zwane from provincial SAPS said the officers were patrolling along Bulwer and Helen Joseph (Davenport) Road in Umbilo when they were flagged down by two men who seemed to be in need of assistance.

Zwane said when the police van stopped, the men pointed guns at the officers.

“They were held up at gunpoint and the suspect disarmed both members of their state firearms. They pulled the officers from the vehicle and drove away. The police vehicle was later found abandoned in Umbilo,” Zwane said.

The police officers walked to Stella Sports Club to seek help.

Zwane said charges of carjacking and robbery were opened at Umbilo police station for investigation. No arrests have been made.
