WHEN Glenwood resident and troop leader of the 58 Durban Air Scouts, Bruce Southey, was considering how to complete his Springbok Community Service Project, he contacted “We are Durban”, an NGO which aids charities in the eThekwini area reach their potential.

The organisation directed the 17-year-old to The Domino Foundation‘s Babies’ Homes in Durban North. Bruce, with his team of five fellow Scouts, spent some 40 hours planning, preparing and producing several items to add excitement and stimulation to the lives of the children at the homes.

“The centre piece of my project was a wooden jungle gym and I also designed a number of boards to give the children the chance to explore sensory and tactile experiences Important for good childhood development,” he said.

Together with Connor Francis, Travis McIntosh, Tristan Rüsch, Darryl Abboo and Swe May, Bruce felt a sense of not only having notched up the requisite hours, but also of having added a special dimension to the lives of the children at the homes.

Linda Davis, “mother” at the homes, said: “Bruce and his friends came with a purpose which they fulfilled superbly!”
