City approves new equipment for DSW

Mayor Zandile Gumede.

MUCH-needed equipment earmarked for Durban’s Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit was approved at a meeting of the eThekwini Executive Committee this week.

A report presented to EXCO requested the new equipment which included specialised vehicles needed for operational requirements.

According to the first report which sought to amend a contract for the supply and delivery of a landfill dozer for waste handling on landfill sites, last year the Unit acquired one landfill dozer, however additional funding had been received for the procurement of specialised machines to assist with the fleet replacement programme and additional requirements.

The Unit requires two additional landfill dozers to assist it to meet its operational demands and help accelerate service delivery.

The report states that the Cleansing and Solid Waste (CSW) Unit is responsible, for among other things, the collection and removal of waste within eThekwini. In order for the Unit to perform its duties it requires specialised vehicles which are suitable for operational requirements.

The second report outlined the need for four 8×4 hook lifts, while the third report outlined the procurement need of two additional compactors. The fourth report outlined the need for 20 additional refuse compaction trucks.
