Uber, metered taxi drivers robbed at gunpoint

THE Police have issued a warning to all Uber and metered taxi drivers to be on high alert when driving in KwaMashu and surrounding areas. This warning comes after a number of robberies were reported where criminals pretend to be clients and want to be fetched from restaurants, night clubs or other places to their requested destination around KwaMashu.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, the suspects stop the drivers at gun point and rob them of their belongings and also take their vehicles.

“We are appealing to the drivers to be vigilant and take extra precautions when asked to pick up clients. On 31 December 2017 at around 22:15, a 41-year-old driver was dropping a passenger in Ndlondo road in G section who had paid him short on the fare and told the driver to wait for someone who would pay the full amount. Suddenly the suspect pointed a firearm at the driver and he was robbed of his cash and two cellphones. The suspect and an accomplice fled the scene,”said Mbhele.

Upon arrival at the destination, the suspect pulled out a firearm from and pointed it at the driver. The second suspect approached and demanded the driver’s cell phone, cash and forced him into the boot of the car. Charges of robberies are being investigated at KwaMashu SAPS.”
