EDITOR – The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry would like to join the country in congratulating the newly elected President, Deputy President and the rest of the Office Bearers of the ANC.
We recognise the hard work executed by the outgoing leadership of the governing party to safely steer the organisation through rough waters to this point successfully. The unity narrative among all the ANC representative is most encouraging to the business community.
The rand has strengthened and investors are cheering this outcome as they believe that Mr Ramaphosa’s reformist agenda will accelerate economic recovery and avoid a credit-rating downgrade.
It is however too early to confirm if this positive market reaction will be sustainable and endure long enough to have real impact on businesses. The proof is always in the ability of the new leadership to implement economic reform strategies from policies to legislation to actual implementation in the market place.
As organised business, the Chamber hopes there will be even more partnership between government, business and labour to deliver lasting solutions for our country towards the eradication of the triple challenges facing South African society. The Durban Chamber is promoting among our members the vision of “remaining in business for a better world.”
The Chamber will continue to lobby government on behalf of business to remove red tape that hinders business from optimal activity. We urgently need a more conducive environment for commerce and industry to thrive in order to create more jobs, thereby reducing poverty and inequality. We want to work with government to ensure that our SMME sector grows and is sustainable. Our skills base must also meet the needs of business as we seek to successfully compete in global markets. Business is also committed to working with government in building strong institutions and the development of infrastructure through innovative funding models. We advocate for the support of a healthy economic eco-system that works for the benefit of all South Africans, especially the disenfranchised.
The Durban Chamber has enjoyed a cooperative relationship with government to date and we look forward to growing the partnership further in order to deliver profits with conscious – towards a better world.
President, Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry
