Constitution comes under interrogation at history symposium

THE Sastri College Alumni Association and Sastri College annual history symposium takes place this weekend and will involve selected schools from the greater Durban area who will, on Friday, make brief presentations on critical aspects of the Constitution. This will be followed by a panel discussion where learners will engage with each other, on the presentations made during the morning session.

On Saturday, Judges Pillay, Mithyane and Justice Yacoob will evaluate key aspects of the Constitution in a panel discussion chaired by Judge Patel.

According to the school’s, Deputy Principal Ms J R Singh, the broad objectives of the colloquium are to contextualize the Constitution within South African history and to locate the Constitution in present day social, economic and political challenges.

“This year’s topic is Interrogating The South African Constitution. 2017 is the twentieth anniversary of the Constitution. It is appropriate that we examine the Constitution with respect to its values, principles, merits and shortcomings. It is the most important document in South Africa defining the rights and obligations of the state, institutions and citizens. Sadly, advocacy of the Constitution has been lacking,” said Singh.

The colloquium is expected to start at 10am on both days and is expected to end at 3pm. This will provide an opportunity for the participants to engage with judges on the current constitution- its strengths, shortcomings and its future in determining the democratic trajectory of the country. The Colloquium will be held at the Sastri College Academic and Convention Centre, Winterton Walk, Durban.
