Six die in freak harbour accident

A FREAK accident at Durban Harbour has claimed the lives of six people, including three SANDF members.

According to Ceron Lennox, advanced life support paramedic from Rescue Care, the six people were killed after inhaling gas at the naval base. Twenty-six others have also been injured.

“Rescue Care Paramedics along with other emergency services were called to the incident around 11.40am. On arrival they found that rescue personal had already retrieved the bodies of six people from a Pit,” said Lennox.

Lennox said the people had already died before paramedics arrived.

“They were declared deceased at the scene. Twenty-six other people had sustained minor injuries and were treated on scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care,” said Lennox.

“At this stage the exact events leading up the incident are unknown however all the necessary authorities were on scene and will be investigating further.”
